The Montrose Center and the LGBTQ community have been hard at work on a place for our seniors to retire. We launched the “There’s No Place Like Home” campaign in 2015, led by honorary campaign co-chairs, former Mayor Annise Parker and State Representative Garnet Coleman, this campaign is committed to the development of the project in Houston’s historic Third Ward. This project is now a reality thanks to the LTR Cloverdale Foundation and especially their chairman, Terry Baggott. The LTR Lewis Cloverdale gift allowed the Center to exceed the $2.5 million fundraising goal needed to secure the donation of the land and the City Council allocation.
The property will feature 112 one- and two-bedroom independent living apartments for low-income seniors ages 62 and older. Eligible seniors will pay no more than 30% of their income for rent. Additional features of the property will include a geriatric primary care clinic; a group dining area; meeting, computer and fitness rooms; a resident library and lounge area; and outdoor recreational spaces. On June 3rd and 4th community organizations are coming together to throw a Wizard of Oz themed launch party to launch this historic project. Save the date and stay tuned for more details!
