What does it mean to be transgender? In this program, we will unpack the differences between sexuality, gender identity, gender expression, and anatomical sex, featuring Colt Keo-Meier, PhD, and Lou Weaver.
Mr. Weaver and Dr. Keo-Meier, local experts in gender and sexuality who happen to be transgender men, will explore the nuances between each of these concepts and practical considerations for interacting with transgender people in a sensitive manner. We will discuss initial considerations for mental health practitioners who are open to working with transgender people and their families, though the program is not limited to mental health professionals—all are welcome.

About the Presenters:
Colt Keo-Meier, PhD, graduated from the Child and Family Track of the University of Houston’s Clinical Psychology Program in 2013. He is currently completing his postdoctoral fellowship at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston and has taught the “Psychology of Human Sexuality” for three years at UH. He is currently the co-chair of the Committee for Transgender People and Gender Diversity for Division 44 of the American Psychological Association. Colt has received multiple awards for his research and has authored nine peer-reviewed publications and two book chapters.
Lou Weaver serves as a co-chair for the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force’s Creating Change 2014 conference in Houston and is active with the diversity committee of the Houston chapter of the Human Rights Campaign. Lou speaks frequently on LGBT issues, specializing in trans discussions in the Houston area. He is currently completing his studies at the University of Houston, where he is a member of the LGBT Resource Center’s Advisory Board. He has helped educate the UH Student Health Services and Counseling and Psychological Services on culturally competent care for the LGBT communities.
