VA Surveys LGBT Veterans & Service Members

LGBT Veterans: What do your healthcare providers need to know?

The U.S. Dept. of Veteran’s Affairs is reaching out to LGBT veterans through the Montrose Center to try to improve the quality of healthcare it provides.

Michael R. Kauth, PhD, is the director of LGBT Program, Patient Care Services at the VA. Dr. Kauth serves on the Montrose Center’s Board of Directors and is a Professor in the Dept. of Psychiatry of Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Kauth says the goal is to get a broad sample of LGBT veterans to participate in the survey, especially those living in rural areas, ultimately to provide clinically appropriate and culturally sensitive health care for LGBT Veterans. The survey is anonymous; no personal identifiers are collected.

“Researchers are studying how stigma and harassment experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) service members while in the military is associated with current individual and social health-related factors and health outcomes.”

The study asks military Veterans who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender to complete a 15-20 minute anonymous survey about their military experiences and their current personal health and healthcare experiences.  Survey results will be used to better understand how negative experiences in the military may affect future health. Participants do not need to be enrolled in VA care to complete the survey, and you do not need to be “out” in order to complete the survey.
