1978: A Year to Remember
Thirty-three years ago, Gilbert Baker, an artist in San Francisco, dyed the very first rainbow flag for gay pride that year. The first design had eight colors, unlike the current flag, which has six. Baker originally had hot pink and turquoise in the rainbow.
Also in the late 70’s, many cities around the U.S. began repealing ordinances that prohibited discrimination against us in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities. Anita Bryant led the charge in Florida, and when she came to Houston in 1978, thousands of people turned out to protest her arrival. It was during that time that a number of LGBT leaders came together for Town Hall Meeting. Out of that came Montrose Counseling Center. We celebrate our birthday on December 18, 1978.
