HATCH Hosts Film Festival

HATCH is hosting its first Summer Film Festival. Youth Services Specialist Deb Murphy says two films will be shown every Tuesday afternoon in Room 101 of the GLBT Cultural Center, 401 Branard St., beginning July 13 and running through August 24.

SCHEDULE:

  • July 13: Celluloid Closet / Big Eden
  • July 20: Children’s Hour / The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
  • July 27: Philadelphia / Desert Hearts
  • August 3: Torch Song Trilogy / D.E.B.S.
  • August 10: The Band Played On / Better Than Chocolate
  • August 17: Transamerica / In and Out
  • August 24: Aimee and Jaguar / La Cage aux Folles

The first show will begin at noon, with a short introduction and follow-up by Murphy, who is the former Director of the Houston Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. She says that the films were selected, in part, to teach the HATCH youth about Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender history while exposing them to GLBT culture. “That is why we extended an invitation to the SPRY participants, because they can add to the commentary while educating the youth.”

It’s also an opportunity for the youth to have something to do during summer break. Murphy adds, “There will have adequate air conditioning, too, which some of the youth and seniors don’t have at home.”

Murphy continues, “We owe a great deal of gratitude to the John Steven Kellett Foundation for generously donating the large flat screen television to HATCH.”

HATCH provides a safe, affirming social environment for GLBT and Questioning youth, ages 13 – 20, and is dedicated to empowering and Questioning (GLBTQ) adolescents to become responsible citizens and positive contributors to society.

At the other end of the spectrum, SPRY provides a variety of support services to GLBT persons who are age 60 and older, including assessment, peer support, counseling, and case management, and an ongoing schedule of social and recreational activities.
