I am My Brother's/Sister's keeper: Fight HIV/AIDS

The U.S. Government’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention projects, “approximately one in 16 black men will be diagnosed with HIV during their lifetime, as will one in 32 black women.” In February, we observe National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

Why do we need a day for Black HIV/AIDS Awareness?

The CDC reports that among all African Americans, gay and bisexual men are the most affected by HIV, followed by heterosexual women; and African Americans continue to face the most severe burden of HIV and AIDS of all racial/ethnic groups in the nation.

At any time, not just on February 7, Montrose Counseling Center offers FREE HIV and TB screenings to persons who are identified as being at risk for HIV infection and are uncertain of their HIV status, such as men who have sex with men (MSMs), injection drug users (IDUs), and other substance users at risk for HIV infection who may or may not be seeking treatment.

The People That You Meet – Community PROMISE from Montrose Counseling Center.

MCC’s Community PROMISE team works to educate vulnerable populations about HIV/AIDS and how to reduce one’s the risk of HIV infection. The Peers Reaching Out and Modeling Intervention Strategies (PROMISE) program works by allowing members of the African American MSM community to share their stories about how they have lowered their risk for HIV infection. Ways of reducing risk include increasing condom use, reducing the number of sexual partners, decreasing substance abuse, and engaging in safer methods of drug use. Besides sharing their own stories, Peer Advocates distribute other role model stories, condoms, and bleach kits. Their participation allows MCC to reach people who otherwise might not receive services. For more information or to volunteer as a Peer Advocate, please call 713.529.0037 x321.
