Kindred Spirits Celebration Dance 2018

Kindred Spirits was more than a night club that was founded by Marion E. Coleman in 1980. Kindred Spirits Nightclub was a community center and served as a hub for Houston’s lesbian and gay community hosting organizational meetings, fundraisers, and theatrical presentations.

Even though the nightclub closed, Houston’s strong LGBTQ community lives on.  There are few places this can be seen as much as at the Kindred Spirits Celebration Dance, held every August. This event has grown into Houston’s largest LGBTQ dance that attracted 500 people to the Ballroom at Bayou Place on Friday August 17th.

With fewer safe spaces available to lesbian and bisexual women, the dance provides for them and their friends the chance to relieve their younger years. Whether it was coming into Houston for Kindred Spirits Nightclub, the Ranch or Chance’s as a college youth or living in Montrose the Kindred Spirits dance remains a place for the community to reconnect and celebrate.

The Center was thrilled by the turnout and grateful for the money raised to support Hatch Youth, SPRY, and Montrose Center’s women’s programming, AssistHers and Lesbian Health Initative.

We want to extend a special thank you to Lisa Scarborough, Craig Howard, and Kirksey Gregg at the Ballroom at Bayou Place for giving this amazing event it’s new home, to Carl Han who volunteered his services as our DJ for the entire evening, and to Marion, Trudy, Betty, Judy, Renee, Margaret, Judy, Jessica, Cindy, Sallie, Marshella and all the women of Kindred Spirits for your trust in the Center to keep this dance a community institution. And finally, we couldn’t make this event happen without our generous supporters! See y’all on the dance floor in August 2019!
