Mayor Turner’s LGBTQ Advisory Board To Hold Public Vigil Honoring Pulse Massacre Victims  First of several Pride Month activities for City Board

HOUSTON – Mayor Sylvester Turner’s LGBTQ Advisory Board will be holding a public vigil to honor the victims of last year’s attack at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando on Monday, June 12th at the Montrose Center (401 Branard). The event will take place from 7 to 9 PM on the one-year anniversary of the tragedy. The Board was announced during last year’s Pride month with 49 members appointed by the Mayor, paying tribute to the number of LGBTQ+ lives lost in the attack.

The vigil will feature speakers from the Latinx communities, who were disproportionately affected by the tragedy. A proclamation signed by Mayor Sylvester Turner will be presented by Mayor Pro Tem Ellen Cohen at approximately 7:45 PM.

The aim of this event, which is open and free to the public, is to honor those lost in the targeted  attack, send a strong message of condolence to the family and friends of victims, and show  solidarity with LGBTQ communities of Orlando and across the nation.

“It is important that we remember that while we have made many advances, the LGBTQI community is still vulnerable,” says co-chair Lou Weaver. “On this year anniversary, it is important for those of us who can be visible to be out and for our allies to be in solidarity with us.”

This vigil is the first in a series of Pride Month events for the City’s LGBTQ Advisory Board. On June 24th, the Board will participate in Pride festivities. Board Co-Chair Lou Weaver has been selected as a 2017 Grand Marshal for Pride Houston in recognition of his extensive advocacy for all LGBTQ communities. Members from the board will participate by marching with Weaver in the Pride Parade and through their respective organizations.

“PRIDE month is our biggest display of resilience, and our community’s resilience is inspiring,” says co-chair Melanie Espinosa Pang. “We are working toward lived equality and justice for all and celebrating our love and authenticity as a community– all while protecting each other and healing from the violence we face. This month, let’s share joy in how far we’ve come and replenish ourselves for the work ahead.”

Now in its first full year, the Board serves as a direct link between the mayor’s office and the LGBTQ community, providing guidance and recommendations on issues. The Board meets on a bi-monthly basis and is structured into three committees: Communications, Outreach, and Policy & Advocacy. Each committee further organizes into workgroups focused on various aspects of LGBTQ life in Houston, including LGBTQ business, Transgender & Intersex Rights and Visibility.
