World AIDS Day Observances

For many of us who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, HIV still impacts our lives, whether you are someone living with the virus, taking your medications every day, and taking precautions to reduce your risk, or if you love and care for someone who does. In addition to some of the regular observances we have scheduled this year, we are adding a Movie Night at the GLBT Cultural Center. On Tuesday, November 29, we will take a look back at the early days, when HIV was first discovered and the how our community reacted to the politics of the government, scientific and medical communities in the 1993 film, “And the Band Played On.” The movie begins at 7 p.m. in rooms 106 & 107 of the GLBT Cultural Center, 401 Branard St., 1st Floor. Snacks will be available to purchase with all proceeds benefiting Montrose Counseling Center.

On World AIDS Day, Thursday, December 1, our outreach team will be at Kroger, 3300 Montrose Blvd., from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. offering free, confidential HIV testing. The test involves a simple swab inside the cheek. Walk-ins are welcome: no appointment is necessary. Results will be available in less than an hour.

At 5:30 p.m., MCC will participate in the World AIDS Day citywide Candlelight Observance in Tranquility Park. Houston Mayor Annise Parker and State Representative Garnet Coleman will say a few words, along with other leaders in the fight against HIV/AIDS. As always, we are looking forward to hear Aaron Coleman grace us with his poetry in the crisp evening air as we light our candles. Please come out to remember those we’ve lost and give a message of hope and inspiration to one another. In case of bad weather, the observance will move to the rotunda at City Hall.

Throughout the month of December, we will be adding links to our Chain of Remembrance. Strips of paper will be available in the reception area for you to decorate. Write your name or the name of someone you’re thinking about. Express your feelings with words or drawings. Leave your link at the front desk and we’ll put it up. Every year we add to the chain which now reaches all the way around our lobby area. Some people decorate a link and bring it to us to add to the chain. You are certainly welcome and encouraged to do that if you prefer.
